There is a dampening field around humanity’s light making it hard to see one another. It diminishes your energy, affects the spirit or soul, limits your experience of connection with one another and the planet and the universe. It restricts your experience of what is possible, and finally makes you vulnerable to the illness of fear.
We call this dampening field the Great Myths. These Myths are deep, collective beliefs sustained over millennia, almost invisible. They are energetic fields that influence your actions and beliefs and the development of your communities. They show up in small and big ways.
Our relationship with these energetic fields is complicated and requires work to untangle. One strategy is to become aware of the dampening field, and fight with it, to stop its ability to influence you. The other strategy is to follow many of the ideas we have talked about each week – which let the light in and restore your natural way of being. Yes, the Great Myths corrupt the natural flow, your natural flow of growth and when necessary healing.
You are not victims of the Great Myths. You are Creators and you can choose a different course of action. Being Awake through noticing, sensing and listening is a strong response.
Here are the names of the Great Myths.
1) Myth of Aloneness, 2) Myth of Ownership, 3) Myth of Lines, 4) Myth of Time, 5) Myth of Less-Than Better-Than, 6) Myth of Innocence, 7) Myth of Form, 8) Myth of Attraction, 9) Myth of Pairing
The Myth of Aloneness whispers – you are separate, unique, not your brother’s or sister’s keeper. Do what you want. You are the center of the universe. This myth blocks your experience of connection.
The Myth of Ownership whispers – how much you “own” determines your happiness, self worth, importance in your community. However, remember whatever surrounds you is just visiting.
The Myth of Lines whispers – control through rules, people must be controlled, they are lazy and not trustworthy. Set up tests for people with invisible lines to see if they are worthy. This myth limits your experience of what is possible.
The Myth of Time whispers – multitask, follow the seconds, determine success by how much you accomplish. This myth encourages you to live in the past - in memory, or live in the future - in desire. A focus on time blocks your ability to sense energy.
The Myth of Less-Than Better-Than whispers – across all your communities men are better than women, rank and rate everyone to determine their worth. This myth blocks our ability to Respect.
The Myth of Innocence whispers – live for this moment, the world is too complicated. You can’t solve your communities/ problems, you are not responsible. This myth blocks the natural process of healing.
The Myth of Form whispers – form is everything. Physical form supersedes energetic form, the end justifies the means, things must be a certain way, it is all or nothing. However, attachment to form is the source of unhappiness for many. The Myth of Form blocks our ability to Appreciate.
The Myth of Attraction whispers – your self-worth is determined by how good you look and what people think about you. It says more attractive people are happier and treated well by the community.
The Myth of Pairing whispers – find someone to complete you, find a few, make your tribe, This myth would have you believe that your capacity for connection, true connection, is limited. This myth distracts your from Service.
The key to stepping out of the entanglement of the Great Myths is to have a practice. The myths are like a mist everywhere and nowhere yet capable of turning into guardrails or walls that you bump into when you try to leave their field of influence. A practice shines a bright light piercing the mist. Consider practices such as walking side by side, speaking the truth, seeing other people, sensing/listening/noticing, pondering, pausing, releasing fear, speaking from the heart. (see our index of practices)
Try to become aware of how the Myths are actively fueled in your community. Write down the great myths put them up on the wall. Even knowing their names makes a difference!
